Restricted Betting

Was listening to a radio piece on bookmakers in the UK on the way to work and it was about how bookies restricted people''s betting or even closing their accounts. It was initially thought that this just happening to "professional gamblers" but looks like plenty of normal punters with knowledge above the norm were also having this happening to them.

I know some guys on here seem to have pretty positive gambling records (or at least claim to) so just wondered if this had happened to anyone here.

Was interesting to hear that NSW has rules stopping bookies from declining bets under $2000 too.

Fairly certain Toolman or someone had some stuff restricted for certain rugby league betting options.

MY bet365 account is restricted, but I've no bloody idea why it's not like I was making serious money for it. Still waiting to hear back from them.

Yep. Pretty standard. They even have ways of identifying particular people from betting patterns happening in branches and then telling the branch not to let said person punt or to restrict the amount.

Basically from what I've seen, at least with fixed odds (tote options would be unrestricted as the house always wins) then the betting system is set with a load of warnings based on bet values, volumes, account details etc. When one of these alarms goes off - either through account or branch betting - then it comes up on the bookmaker's Risk Management screen. This allows the bookmaker to intervene to restrict the bet value or change the odds.

Yeah a woman was interviewed on it (an actress did her voice etc) and was saying that they have to spot these "professional gamblers" if they come into a branch based on their bets and feed information about them to head office, which is then passed around all branches. If they are found to have missed one then it is a sackable offense, which seems pretty harsh.

There is also some programme that all the bookies use that can supposedly identify a bettor irrelevant of what account they are using and they all use it so they end up being barred/shut down by all bookies.

I can understand them looking to shut down "pros" but if it is extending beyond that it is a bit dire. Pretty much they are trying to push everyone to the casino games side of things, rather than betting.

Yeah, sportsbet decided to part company with me entirely pretty quickly.

bet365 decided to remove my option to bet on first and last tryscorer markets until I contacted them about it and they 'corrected the error', but I somehow don't think it was actually an error. I'm sort of surprised they haven't actually done more though because I've taken then for 30k+ now.

I think betfair would have less need to do this than other agencies given their whole market works a bit differently, which is the main reason I try to do most of my betting there.

Very common. It happens a lot with people who arbitrage, I've been banned from promotions on one site and limited on another because I essentially only bet promos.

Do you use any software or that for deciding your bets?

  9. AVA T Delonge

    Just his operating system.

Different betting agencies keep in contact with each other to try and restrict the amount of arbitrage opportunities. Nothing that bookies hate more than arbitragers.

Yeah sportsbet basically banned me from making any significant bets. Was maybe like 6k in the green. They're happy to exploit the losers whilst banning the winners.

30k is huge. I know you don't like divulging your bets so people can't hassle you about it, but what are you betting on generally? First/last try scorer and margins?

I had accounts suspended on Sportingbet, Centrebet, Bet356.

All after i had won a decent amount of money within my first month of signing up.

He seems to just bet on that and outside odds from what I've seen.. aka in the first semi of Roosters V Melbourne, Melbourne were paying over $3... he assumes if they played or simmed 3 games Melbourne would probably win at least once therefore mathematically it's a good bet. You see ones like that often but the trouble is remaining consistent cause you can easily lose 5 in a row and get discouraged.

Yeah pretty much. If something's an 8% chance of happening but paying 35.00, or a 40% chance but paying 3.00, then you're probably going to lose your bet, but if you make enough of those bets where you're on the right side of the odds then it eventually turns into a really big profit. I pretty much do the exact opposite of what MF does. I think MF-style betting is more likely to get someone flagged but sportsbet had me sussed really early anyway.

A lot of my wins come on obscure cricket markets that betting agencies probably don't have really have the info/inclination to research. They'll offer things like highest run scorer in Holland v Scotland and not really have a proper idea what they're doing when they set the odds. World Cup qualifiers and even some World Cup games are great for stuff like that because they feel obliged to offer markets on them.

I started jagging some decent wins together on bet365 a while back and they limited my betting so I stopped betting altogether with them. 5 months later they started sending me bonus bets because I wasn't betting with them anymore. That's the only one though.

I was hammering crown bet this season because they were the only ones left who were putting up player stats markets as all the other bookies took it down 4 weeks in after they realised how much of a farce NRL.com's stats are. So yeah after a few weeks with crownbet, they had to personally review all of my bets and would usually cut them in half. Although once I called up as they had a player who didn't play for either team in there and asked me if I wanted that player as a market in the actual game which was pretty cool

Bet365 stopped giving me the loyalty bonus because of "account restrictions" aka turning their bonus $$ into $300 odd on several occasions which I've documented here. I don't really bet that much with them anymore which is aa shame as they have the best cash out system (cash out options on basically everything and good cash out value). Paddypower of late (especially for RWC) have had the best odds and promotions so have bet with them mainly over the past few months.
