Given that we're at the halfway mark, it's probably a good chance to look at this. Are there any other contenders aside from Daly Cherry-Evans and Tariq Sims? Is Will Hopoate eligible? Elijah Taylor's had a promising start too but he hasn't really been receiving the plaudits. Who are you blokes tipping?
The commentators always spruik Reed (mainly Vossy) but I don't think he is in the same league as the players mentioned above.
I reckon Daly Cherry-Evans should get it. It's so much more difficult to come in and dominate as a halfback. If Tariq keeps playing like he did today, though, it's gonna be mighty difficult for him not to get it./
If it continues the way it has been, Tariq Sims. No question. Bloke made 125m from 9 runs today, and made 30 tackles at good efficiency. Also had a hand in two tries and scored one from half way. Week before he made 155m from 18 runs and 23 tackles. His ball control needs a little work, sure. Some players take time to adjust from playing on the bench to starting. Tariq has actually been even better. Last bench game he made 100m from 10 runs which in itself is superb. And he can play prop and second row with almost equal distinction IMO. This is world class by anyone's standard.
Yeh been some really good rookies this year... pretty sure Hopoate is eligible. DCE will probably have a down period as teams get a better look at him... always easier for a forward or back.
Sims has shown in his limited stints as much as almost any other forward has this season. He's been nothing short of quality.
Definitely Sims for me. I've been more impressed with Taylor than DCE and Hopoate tbh but Taylor has no chance realistically.
I reckon Widdop's better than DCE as well. Haven't see Hopoate or Taylor play closely. Different player to Sims- i'd take Sims but that's because Melbourne need him more.
