If I felt he were the best manager available for a job, I'd hire him. Don't care about this really and I'd have serious concerns about the playing group's character if they objected.
I doubt the playing group would care what you felt about their character though, as hiring Mackay would show quite clearly how much a person's character meant to you... I'd have serious reservations about his decision-making being influenced by his prejudices, and I could completely understand if the playing group had concerns about it as well.
All accounts of him as a person from those who've worked closely with him in the past i've heard are that he's not prejudiced though. As bad as that PFA statement was about it being banter, it probably was. They would have spoken to him and he'd have seen the statement before it was released. And sure some of those texts are pretty horrific on face value but the whole point of shock humour is you say things that everyone knows is really outrageous. But you both know its not meant so its no harm done - it happens all the time on this site. I think it will be a brave chairman to hire him for a little while now. I don't see him getting another job for a few years at least
Well let's say Mackay is the scapegoat, and just went along with it because that's the culture. I find that even worse for football as a whole. Yes, all the top staff at the club know the banter is not meant 'that way', but once a black guy joins the staff what do you do? Stop that culture immediately? But no single guy can on his own, this is acceptable banter, so whoever calls that out is the one likely to be treated like the outsider and get the freedom of speech, just joking, rationalisation arguments. The boss *might* be able to, but it will be a challenge to their authority, which is precarious enough for most managers. Easiest way out: the black guy just has to suck it up. Shock humour can be funny to some people, but is the fun worth it for taking the spirit out of a colleague in what's supposed to be a high-performance environment?

Some of the texts could be passed off as jokes but not the one about the list of transfer targets "not having too many white faces on there". Where's the joke there? It's just "I don't want to sign black players".
or it could be there were a number of Asian players on there because Vincent Tan is a spastic and would want a team of Asians.
