Long and pointless which league is better wanking thread

From the point of view of a top side, I'd much prefer my players coming through as a group of players that you can build a side around, rather than scattering them amongst other clubs. The top sides on the continent all do this, and I think it's part of what protects them a little against a Chelsea/Manchester City style title charge on money alone. A champion team will always beat a team of champions. Also, as a lower-league club, I reckon I'd feel a hell of a lot more worthy of promotion and confident of staying up if the team had done it off their own backs, rather than being fortunate enough to gain some top players on loan.

I think they are two separate yet related issues though. I can see the benefit from the top sides' POV in having reserve sides play professionally; but the English system is set up (regardless of how it works in practice) to not just cater for the top flight, but to be a pyramid with leagues feeding down to regional levels. In theory the local pub team could work their way up the pyramid if they joined an applicable league. Allowing B sides to join, say, the third tier would completely shatter that.

As for the loan thing; hey, as a Tranmere fan I'm well placed to comment. On our forum a lot of fans have moaned about the number of loans we've had this season. I'm unsure about how I feel about short-term loans. But with the long-term ones we've had, it's not all that different to the amount of players we've had on one year contracts over the years. As long as those players are putting in the effort I expect, it doesn't make much difference to me whether they are back at Sheff Wed next season or not, because since we got relegated I'm accustomed to us having to rebuild the team each year anyway.

That being said, I think the loan system does need a review, but I'd be wary of them going too far simply because I'm so dead set against Prem reserve sides worming their way into the leagues I follow. There probably does need to be a lower limit on how many loan players you can have, but top sides will veto any suggestions that go too far purely because they want their youngsters playing competitively.

EPL is the best league on the whole in terms of 20 teams. Currently the first teams of Spanish top teams (top 3) is better than EPL but that keeps evolving almost season to season.

Spain as a league is close second, followed still by Italy for me and then Germany. (Evaluating all 20 teams in the league as a whole, not just the top teams).

I'd agree with Cevno that the EPL has the strongest group of teams. La Liga is going to turn into a glorified SPL if they don't do something about their TV deals. Real and Barca currently get about 2/3 of the TV money, the league cannot sustain itself as a very top league on that set up.

I really see the Bundesliga become the main rival to the EPL overall, but I don't see it happening overnight. There top teams are back up there with the best but the middle and lower teams still seem not great.

Spanish top flight has the best top 2 teams
Premier league has the best teams as a whole and the best finance shares over all the teams
Bundesliga has the best league structure in terms of pricing etc and fans

I'd back Werder Bremen to beat the bottom half of Premier League clubs tbh.

Id back Southampton to put quite a few past them tbh.

You haven't seen Bremen play much this season then ;)

On the reserve topic, it actually works great in Germany. The 'reserve' sides are U23 teams (plus 3 overagers on matchdays), usually made up of youth team graduates + some players signed from lower league sides to strengthen these teams to make them some what competitive.

And it's good for players to get picked up by these U23 sides (which is usually only a small number), you get better coaching for a start, and opens up great opportunities for you to make a break through in BL, 2BL or 3.Liga.

It's not like the actual clubs of the lower league get the short end of the stick or anything like that, just go and look who's been promoted from the Regionalliga in the last decade, 95% of them are actual clubs, it's rather rare for an U23 to actually get promoted to the 3rd tier. On top of this, since it's regional in the 4th tier, the U23 teams actually get pretty solid away support (better then a lot of 'actual' clubs in the 4th tier) if the senior team is on the same day.

Hell, Kaiserslautern U23 v Waldhof is a lot of FCK fans (and Waldhof fans for that matter) favourite fixture of the year and usually take between 500-1000 away fans to Mannheim for those games.

And yes Bundesliga overall isn't as strong as some of the other leagues, a lot of these teams have had very little money to spend over the years though, bearing in mind these teams typically aren't going to spend more money then they actually have *cough*Championship teams*cough*.

They are getting better slowly though as shown by the European Group Stage performance of German teams this year.

I don't think the Bundesliga will reach EPL level, mainly as EPL finances are, well, ridiculous. But I'll take being a top 4 league, still seeing great football and cheap tickets any day of the week.

A league is best because it has a finals series.

    I'll cop that yeah :p

    Bundesliga by a mile.

Standing in the Bundesliga is so gun.

I think we can rule out the A League from this topic.

Standing at footy is awesome. When I pick my away games, those with terraces are likely to get priority. Hence why I always liked going to Peterborough even though the place is a dive.

Would fucking love to do it in a big crowd/

  17. Callum CJ Laing

I'm the same. The non-SPL games in Scotland always have way better atmospheres despite being way less attended due to standing.
