    Exactly. Too simple-minded for change.

Any competititon that can be won by a team with a negative WLR who finished 8th has a joke of a system. Just my opinion but still...

It's not being simple-minded I don't think. The game has evolved a long way, in many different ways, from when it ways first played. Just the system you love isn't the one we love, or the one we want. The one we have is tried and tested and it's the one the majority of fans here in England want and enjoy the most. After all, most of the money that goes into the EPL from a fan source is from fans in the UK, so why displease us by putting in a system we don't really want.

I can see the flip side of the argument as in - if the NRL tried to change/implement a first past post system then there would be an uproar

NRL, AFL and the US sports are different because there's not an equal fixture list in the league.

In the EPL, or any other major world league, every team in the competition plays the same teams the same amount of times as everyone else. The best team is the best team over the course of 30, 34, 36, 38, 46 or however many games are played over the course of the season. Artificially adding "excitement" isn't necessary and would detract from the regular season.

Even if we played 30 games a season - with one home and away game between every club we would still never bring in first past the post.

That's because we have a salary cap and there's absolutely no distinction between finishing 2nd and 15th.

Each to their own I reckon, finals aren't needed in EPL and they're awesome in competitions like the NRL.

I love the excitement of finals, but hate how little emphasis is put on the 'minor' premierships in Australian sport and how a side can dominate all year, slip up in a game and be gone. The fairest way would be to have 3 or 5 game series rather than one off matches like in Basketball. It eliminates that rogue result or two and generally gives the better side a better chance of winning.

    Sounds really boring.

Yes, hence finals are needed in the NRL.

But luck in one match can be incredibly lopsided. Over 38 games the chances are that luck will even itself out.

This is exactly it. Imagine if Tottenham finished fourth this season, and won the title. The world would be full of butthurt Manchester United fans saying "We all know who the real champion is; the one who was better all season long."

    That's not it at all.

Think of Test Cricket. They once said that limited overs cricket would be a greater spectacle for the fans. It was for the light-hearted fans, but most of the diehard fans saw it as an interesting side dish, but nothing more.

The difference with football, is that whilst Test Cricket is not easy for the casual viewer to get into and enjoy the tradition and format in its purest form, A pure league format has managed to attract a multi-billion following of what we could consider hard-core premier league fans. Whilst many people couldn't get into the tradition of Test cricket because it came across as boring, with football, the majority of people have embraced the traditions of the format and enjoy the game primarily within that context. I can assure you that there would be a mass outcry around the world if the premierleague was americanised. People enjoy the premierleague because it is a sport/league with tradition and detail that they can fully indulge themselves in and be genuine, knowledgeable, tradition-enjoying fans, as opposed to most sports where they would just be an outsider n00bfan.

how the fuck could you honestly bring cricket into this argument.

It really is a non-issue afaic. A finals series in League football just wouldn't work.

I can see an argument for changing the promotion/relegation playoffs or who gets CL football but in a 38 game season where there are no external issues such as a Salary cap/international commitments then the team who finishes top of the pack is the best and should be rewarded for that.

As a United fan I'd be so bitter now if we had to go and play City in a final for the title. We were 15 points clear when we won it, to then lose it in a final is ridiculous.
Football as a sport is so susceptible to chance or outside factors its unreal. Wigan winning the FA Cup final for example. That's great in a cup competition where they've played 5 or 6 games to get there but after 38 games its too much.

When you look at the sports where it does work, Rugby Union in this country for example, the best teams will lose their best players for 5 weeks in February to international games and 2 or 3 weeks in October. The NFL has a salary cap and is more of a cup format in that really you're only competing against 3 other teams to qualify for the playoffs.

It would be stupid to implement finals here

Jesus, I'd watch the shit out of any league that gave someone a Money in the Bank briefcase.

Also, on a more serious note, a play-off system in the top flight would pretty much render the FA Cup almost entirely useless. It's for all the same reasons that a cup format in Australian football, rugby league and Australian soccer wouldn't/won't work - the best teams already have a play-off, why bother watching one of a lower quality?

How would it work? Be so immense, Dortmund are coasting to CL victory, but they've used their subs and have had a red card. All of a sudden, Stoke City emerge with the briefcase!!
