Goal-line technology

I just can't think of a way it can be implemented without killing the flow in football. I think offsides for goals is the only possible one because there's a break in play both times - though expect to see 10 min injury times if that happens

Yeah. I'm not supporting the idea at all and would have no idea how it could be implemented.

I'm quickly coming round to the idea of a rugby style clock.

I've always wanted a rugby style clock. Would completely remove time wasting at setpieces and for subs.

    Doesn't go far enough.

We need a DRS/challenge/video ref system in place as well.

How the fuck is the linesman supposed to get from 40 odd yards out, to perfectly in line with the goal line in the 2 or 3 seconds it takes the ball to travel that distance?

Answers on a postcard to: he can't, it's not possible.

edit: video hasn't embedded. It's Pedro Mendes' "goal" vs Man Utd.

    edit2: ahah.

Was against it in the past but I'm not really fussed now. Haven't seen any figures thrown around but would imagine it to cost a fair bit.

I'll give you a couple of quick examples where it can quite easily be implemented:

    1. Wayne Rooney is running through on goal. Vincent Kompany is chasing. Rooney's reached the edge of the box, there's a tangle of legs and Kompany has brought him down. A clear foul, and the referee's blown his whistle. But was it inside the area? The referee's not 100% sure. Would you prefer him to:

    a) guess
    b) consult the video referee to see if he should be giving Manchester United a free kick or penalty

    2. We're in a title situation similar to last season's. Except this time it's Manchester United who need to turn a draw into a win. They're piling bodies forward, and David de Gea launches it into the penalty box. Vidic and Skrtel challenge for the header, along with about 6 other bodies. A hand's been used (Carragher's), but the referee isn't 100% sure who's hand. This could be massive. Should he

    a)guess
    b) consult the video referee to get the decision right.

Yep, definitely. Too many important matches have been decided by woeful refeering and also the fact that referee has been unable to make a clear judgement due to whatever obstructions.

The game needs to evolve with the times. If we're at a stage in society where we can easily use technology to change something taking an extra 5 seconds, why not do it.

A team being robbed of a penalty/goal etc can cost not onlys millions of dollars but also put years of effort to waste on something that could easily been rectified in 5 seconds.

A football match lasts generally just under 100 minutes with injury time included so I honestly don't see the big deal in an extra even 30 seconds being required to make the right decision.

The world cup happens once every four years and the way England got robbed against Germany in 2010 is a joke, or the way Mexico conceded an obviously offisde goal against Argentina (not saying either would've won, but it makes a huge difference).

 at prez in this whole thread. Such a fucking retard and calling an analogy a metaphor absolutely topped it off

Claiming that it will break up play is pretty lol's.

Couldn't be worse then the 38953742837 dives that occur every game.

They have been experimenting with the Video Review system in Field Hockey, btw. Similar sort of sport in terms of dynamics except it doesn't have any offsides.

This technology for goal lines is good, but in terms of cost to number of times it will be utilized can see a case of why adminstrators were being resistant.

Imo if sky sports or who ever broadcasts it can get that line on the defenders when looking at replays of offisides why not use it, the only problem is whether it will filter from the top leagues and how far down it will go.

Goal line tech Is a must simple as, too many teams have been robbed of goals, and it happens so many times in a yearly basis
