I'm happy that he's still available for the WC anyway. Gonna need him I think.

Agree that the AB's might need him. He is the obvious choice in case of any injury. BUT, as we have seen in the past, the AB selectors tend to look past players who are not committed to the ABs, so he might lose his status as 3rd in line now. The question is to who?

I highly doubt the AB selectors will be thinking like that in WC year tbh. If they are I will be extremely surprised, disappointed and outraged all at the same time. They will be picking the best players available. Or they will suffer the wrath of the NZ rugby public.

Realistically it's time to think about the future after the world cup as well. He could easily play in France for two years, go back to NZ and start tearing it up and still make the 2019 world cup team.

Slade's money is over three years right?

What's he on with the ABs, saders etc?

On the topic of flyhalves and their futures: Bernard Foley recommitted to Aus and the Tahs for 3 years. Being probably the 2nd in line number 10 in Aus, this makes sense.

No that's per season. I read somewhere the other day that the salary ceiling for Super 15 players was $180,000, so it's about 4 times as much as he's earning now, if that's the case.

I think I've asked this before but why should playing his club rugby in France affect playing for New Zealand?

Unless we grant you a sabbatical - which we did for Dan Carter who promptly shattered his achilles in his first match - you need to play your rugby in Aotearoa.

The theory is that we want to have a thriving provincial competition and the only way we can hold our star players is making AB eligibility contingent on playing here.

As a side note whenever anyone takes the dollars and goes to play in France or Japan or wherever and comes back to Aotearoa - they come back a weaker player than when they left so a side benefit of making people play here is that our players are better for it.

Hanson did say the door is wide open to overseas players who want to return to have a crack at playing in the WC but yeah the rule is that they need to be playing in NZ to be selected.

Exactly the same reasons why we won't pick players from France. Fair enough too... our Premiership certainly can't compete with France's salaries, and raising the cap will just reduce competition. When you consider how underfunded the Championship sides are over here too it makes perfect sense.

Didn't know that, but I do now. Good post.

Whether or not to raise the salary cap has been discussed a bit this season. On the one hand most clubs can't afford to pay the higher salaries so doing it would reduce the competitive nature of the Premiership, and make it harder for Championship sides coming up to compete (don't even get me started on the funding gap between our top two tiers). On the other hand clubs like Sarries who have big financial backing want to be able to pay the same as the French clubs so they have a better chance of winning the European competition. This season we've performed really poorly in Europe.

Speaking of the Championship though... Massive massive game for Albion today. We're 7 points behind Moseley with 2 games to play - Moseley away today. So anything but a win and we're relegated

How's there so much money in France compared with everywhere else?

  16. Fiery GR Smith

Comparatively high salary caps that are probably being rorted and massive TV deal with Canal+

The club game is much more popular there. They get TV viewing figures in the millions whilst the AP gets hundreds of thousands.

The real question is: why the hell is it so popular?

  18. Fiery GR Smith

Because of the calibre of players they can afford to attract....because of the comparatively high salary caps that are probably being rorted and massive TV deal with Canal+

And unlike in England, their domestic football league is relatively weak.

There's no doubt in my mind that the domestic Rugby game here is hurt massively by the popularity of football
