1 game done, higher than the the gooners on the table. We can do this, 37 games to go.

    Oxford was class!

Reckon it might be something along the lines of Blind at home and someone better at defending away or in tougher games. But hopefully neither is necessary, LVG still seems keen on a new CB and Smalling has been the best of what we have by far since the start of the year.

Still think a new striker is essential, Rooney was shite on Saturday and if he gets injured/remains shite we have no other options at all.

Will be interesting without Thibaut. Begovic impressed in his half hour cameo though.

England fellas. Where's the best place to buy tickets to away games?

Away club usually sells them, if you go to a bad enough league you can get them on the door.

Another scrappy 3 points. Rooney and Memphis particularly struggled, not good to see.

Mata looked slow and predictable, Schweiny looked like his was puffing out of his arse after 5 mins too. Once again we didn't look like breaking through a stubborn defence much.

Januzaj looked good though, and Depay looked, well, raw - the skills are there, they just need honing to our side. Defence looked a little nervy, but not that bad really. At this point of the season we'll take scrappy 1-0's whilst we find our feet and the new boys gel.

What to do about Rooney though? Its clear this system needs someone strong up front, able to play on his own and bring in other players, whilst also having the ability to take the chances he gets too. It wouldn't suit Depay playing through the centre, nor giving Hernandez a run, so it has to be Rooney out of what we've got.
On paper Rooney is probably one of the top 3 choices for that sort of role (Cavani may well be better) - he can run all day, happy to close down defenders, has great strength, playing deeper has given him the ability to link up with teammates, and is a fantastic finisher. However he is such a form player that unless he can find a bit of it soon its really going to have a detrimental impact. I'm willing to put it down to him trying to settle to another new role (as main/lone striker), but if it doesn't come soon.....

Mata looked slow and predictable? He was your best player by a fucking mile yesterday. Outstanding player

He looks great in the middle, but playing as the right hand of the 3, he narrows the play and gets crowded out coming inside each time. It helped when Herrera came on as he'd move right of Mata and offer another outlet, but Januzaj didnt so Mata looked a bit stifled. There's no doubting he's our best for picking a great pass through a defender, but it seems a waste to have him on the right - his vision and passing is impared, and the left back knows he's not going to be challenged by a running winger that much (doubly so when Darmian doesn't seem to push up that much)

I much prefer Depay on the left than through the middle. His strengths lend themself to that position far more than through the middle. I want Mata to play 10 though, he has no pace and is very left footed so even ignoring the fact hes easily in the top 3 10s in the league that right side inside forward role is limiting from a teams pov.

Not surprised Depay looks raw. I watched alot of clips of him over the summer as well as all 4 preseason games and the biggest comparison i can make is to a young Ronaldo. Great in bursts, full of potential but needs refining to become the finished product

Depay will work on the left, agreed. He's got the pace and the willingness to run at defenders. Whilst he'll come inside more often than not, he is happy to go to his weaker side, and will more often than not have Shaw offering that option anyway, meaning the RB can't rest on his laurels. I can't see that happening with Mata/Darmian - though the latter might become more adventurous as he settles. Can understand a bit more why Valencia is still in the reckoning (though surely most LB's have figured out he doesn't actually run at a defence anymore)

Liverpool last autumn to deny that one i think.

To me Depay on a flank (left imo) is a no brainer. The top players in his mould (quick, strong, direct and like to try the occasional trick) are Hazard, Sanchez, Ronaldo, Bale and Robben. All of whom are best on the left wing except maybe Robben but hes left footed

Interestingly, considering LvG has said we lack pace on the flank Ashley Young topped the United top speed list in the Tottenham game (Smalling then Depay in 2nd and 3rd). The Greek channel showing the game displays all these weird stats, and it made me wonder. He was dropped or rested for the Villa game but i think hes thr best of our front 4 on form

  18. Uppercut CB Faldo

Mata on the right is a bit underrated I think, comes up with far more goals+assists from there than all but the very best of the more traditional wingers. Need a bit of pace around him for it to work. Picked out Depay+Januzaj really well for our two chances on Friday but our only striker being a big fucking tree really limits everyone else.

I don't recall Fellaini playing on Friday?

  20. Uppercut CB Faldo

Fellaini is more of an ent. Can actually run/tackle, but only in straight lines.
