    AS THE DUST SETTLES
    by Chris Golding

An old saying says that given time all wounds will heal, and it is safe to say after the controversies that have suddenly eclipsed a quiet Cricsim community, time will be needed.

Step up "Mr Controversy" Ben Hornby. The Stingrays' new father, or so many within the club thought, upped sticks and made a surprise move to the Crusaders, a place many deemed to be a sinking ship, on the announcement that Kelvin Fung was to take over from Gerard King as Stingrays President; it's believed that Hornby disagreed with Fungus being named President ahead of him, so this will surely just be adding to the fire of the Sader-Stingray rivalry. Many thought that this would make the game a fiery affair, but this wasn't before another lynchpin in the Rays batting lineup, Adam Vago, requested release from his contract to join friend Hornby at the Crusaders; Vago was expected to stay put with Hornby, but his disappearance means that Vago was planning to move as well. This didn't sit well with many Stingray players, and the situation is yet to be resolved entirely.

What more could a neutral at Cricsim want? Absolute carnage, title contenders and spoon contenders both going on crazy rides which leaves the title race well up for grabs. As has occurred in many times in seasons gone past, the Crusaders are at the centre of controversy, with new President Ed Ames releasing PM Jackson as Hornby arrived at the club, a difference in characters being the reason sighted. Former (or for the moment at least) Head of Recruitment JJ Ritchie requested release from the club, to which Ed Ames has deterred until he "calmed down" after, what has now been dubbed "Slyzagate" enraged him and made him wish to leave the club. Again, there hasn't been a resolution as of yet but Cricsimmers will no doubt be tuning in to see what ultimately happens, with some people tipping Ritchie to go the the Rays, with Vago going in the other, but there's been no confirmation of this as of yet.

Whatsmore, Alastair Son, the Pumas new President for Season 10, released, to his credit without any bitterness, Muesli (JP Wilkinson) to join the Crusaders as well to top the affair. Two solid signings whips the Saders up from spoon contenders to serious title challengers, provided an impressive batting unit containing Ames, Hornby, Perry and others, such as BI Immanuel, fire. It would be one of Cricsim's greatest turnarounds, and would mean so much to a club which has been at the centre of such controversy in recent seasons. Is it possible for them to mount a plausible challenge on the Bannerman Shield on the back of all this?

When wandering back to the Stingrays' clubhouse, Rays' Allrounder Gary Weaver was asked to sum up the recent days, and he couldn't have been left more stumped. "Um, not sure what to say," he muttered at first, but upon more consideration remarked, "I guess we can only see the reprecussions of the last few days in Season 10."

Some have questioned the contract system with the releases from contracts, and even gone as far as to say they may as well be scrapped if they are signed then ignored. It is fair to say there may be some discussion on rule changes to stop such affairs occurring again.

With people expecting the dust will settle, I have a quote from Ames to say that he has potentially "three more signings up my sleeve, one of which is a Bannerman Shield legend" so it is safe to say that end of the chapter has not yet been reached on this fascinating saga.

To top this all off, I managed to sneak a few words from Ravens' new recruit, Marcuss Deane.

"That quite frankly Eds has the temerity to question the Stingray's integrity over their decision to hold a player to his contract is, quite frankly, ridiculous. Here is a guy who has, on several occasions, approached players who have already signed contracts and implored them to "dog" their sides and join his ever decreasingly popular Crusaders team.
    I don't quite understand it.
It's double standards of the highest order. First he wants to "dog" these teams by approaching their contracted players, who as far as I know are happy and settled at the club, before then accusing others of "dog acts" when they wish to keep their contracted players.
    It's hypocrisy.
    It's ludicrous.
I hope that no self respecting President helps the Crusaders in any way, shape or form. They deserve everything they get, or don't as the case may be.
Leave them wallow in their own mess, making their holier-than-thou attitude look all the more farcical.
Until there's a change of attitude at the Crusaders, or until they release JJ Ritchie, I have nothing else to say on the matter."

They are certainly big words, and the opinion is strong against the actions of the Crusaders, but we'll just have to wait until next week when we'll hopefully be catching up in a full interview with Saders President, Ed Ames, as he responds to these scathing accusations.

    Good article Chris, as always.

Not sure I would agree the Saders are really title contenders unless they sign Vago.
