Geez St George looked about as bad as expected in the opening stanza last night. They're putting a lot of faith in a lot of old bodies, would be something romantic about Griffin taking a bunch of his 2008 under 20s broncos to success 13 years on at a different club, personally I just can't see it coming together, but teams have gone on runs in spite of Griffin before. If they kept hold of McInnes at 9, then maybe there's some hope, but axing McInnes to bring in McCullough of all people, I just don't see it. Do think making Hunt skipper is a good move though.

Was good to see Benji have a good couple of little creative sparks out of dummy half when he got on.

It's even worse for them - McInnes is out for the season with an ACL.

I actually thought he'd signed with the Sharkies from 2021, not 2022. Goes to show how close attention I was paying!

Sharks Vs Dogs game last night was horrendous. Don’t see the fortunes of either clubs changing this year.

I know what you mean but taking it literally I kind of disagree; Cronulla were exceedingly lucky last year and I do see their fortunes changing for the worse.

Moylan gonna carry them to the top 4.

Haha I couldn't be mad at that.

Yeh I genuinely keep forgetting they finished in the top 8 last year.

Souths and Raiders are shaping up as the stronger sides heading into the season. Of the top sides, they've had the least interruptions as far as key positions go, whereas Storm have lost Smith, Roosters aren't settled in the halves and Penrith are looking a bit soft up front.

It could be the right season for a side like Manly to make a surge.

Manly aren't gonna surge anywhere if Foran is playing hooker and Turbo still has shit hammys.

Thoughts on player jerseys getting names on them? I was always a fan of players wearing the number they will be playing, but seeing a team runout in 1-13 in the NRL is pretty rare. I wouldn't have an issue with doing what ESL do and just give you your squad number for the year, or moving the way of other sports and letting a player pick their own number 0-99

I like the numbers the way they are. Don't care either way for names on jerseys.

Names on jerseys are long overdue and a must IMO.

The NRL and NRL clubs do a terrible job with merchandise. As a kid going to Peter Wynn's to pay an extra $10 to get Mini's number 1 printer on the back of my $150 jersey was never the same experience as buying a Viduka #9 Leeds jersey from your local Rebel for almost half the price.

Sadly I think the game has also progressed to a point where a lot of kids follow players more than they do clubs. If clubs are serious about improving their revenue streams merchandise still remains the greatest opportunity IMO.

Dawn! The most impressive opening 3 minutes to a season ever?

Melbourne 90m set, held Souths to a 15m set, then went 60m in the next set to score a try.

Good start from Melbourne. Just typical, business as usual opening from them. So hard to beat in round 1 because they're so well prepared.

Smith and Jennings getting torn to shreds.

Bellamy surely gotta hook one of them or change something up.

Can we get a sniper to take those fucking seagulls out pronto please?

Never bet against Melbourne in round 1. Rule to live by.

That Olam effort was all time.

Feels like it's never going to arrive with Grant, Munster and Pap there, but fuck I can't wait until the day Melbourne are no longer any good.

I didn't see the game last night, How'd Mansour go?

  20. Magic AJ Parker

Melbourne will be good until the day Bellamy leaves.

I feel like they probably win that game quite comfortably last night if Smith was there. They were pretty terrible after the 30minute mark and really struggled to get a hold of the game again which is where Smith's value truly lied.

If not for some errors from the Souths backline deep in their own end gifting Melbourne field position I think Souths would have got Melbourne in the end and I doubt Melbourne have ever (maybe once) given up a 22 point lead before with Smith. Too early to tell if just round 1 rust or genuine post-smith era.
