    I think Thursday night is that weird balance where you want to put the shit teams on because crowd attendance will be awful anyway so you don't screw the fans over, and wanting good teams because it's on FTA and is the opener for the round.

    FTA is a bit of a meme at this point. I think it's important that they still have games, but I don't think it's important that they be high quality ones anymore since Kayo's existence. It's really just important that they're still promoting the sport and their coverage of it. Casuals who don't want to spend $6 a week or whatever on Kayo for the length of the season won't be able to tell the difference between a high quality game and a low quality game other than for the closeness of it and the try highlights, and we still get those with the shit teams in almost equal quantity.

    You'd imagine they're not necessarily going for which game they think is going to be the best quality of footy, but instead which is likely to draw the highest viewership. From that would assume that Dogs, Broncos, Bunnies, Tigers and Eels lead the way there.

    Generally id agree with this but not for the opening rounds. The games are already gonna be lesser because of offseason rust, and then you add pus teams like Canterbury and yeah you get a feeling like the one Gemmell expressed. Its a shit way to start the new season.

    Souths vs Easts, Brisbane v Cows, Canberra vs Easts, all infinitely more marketable and kicks off the year with a bang.
