It’s not just the fact of losing two Immortals and a great halfback as individual players. Losing them all at the same time is even worse.

    No real other option.
Or he is good with refs because he speaks to them calmly, so he gets somewhere instead of running up and yelling at them like most other captains.

The biggest issue with losing Smith is the quality of replacement. You lose a bit when going from Thurston/Cronk to Munster/Hunt, you lose a fucking shitload going from Smith to McCullough.

Yeah I’d say more than a bit JT/Cronk to Munster/Hunt but yeah I agree. The difference between Smith and the next best is like the difference between fg and park footy.

Just gotta hope Hunt and McCullough produce 2015 Broncos form.

Slater would make a good captain imo as he’ll be doing a lot of organising. But he’s 35 as well so we’ll just have to find another in 12 months time anyway. Scott is the only other club captain but he’ll be off the field too much.

It may well spark GI and boy do we need him to fire.

    NSW are into 1.50. lol

Who will kick goals for QLD? I assume it will be Munster or Hunt.

I actually kind of think the opposite. I get where you're coming from with needing two hookers now, but Smith being out means I think it's even more important to a natural first receiver at halfback for 80 minutes, and Hunt is kind of the only one you have now who's even close to Origin standard. Maybe Hunt could still play 80, but 60 at hooker and 20 at half when Morgan came on.. but that's the sort of drastic mid-game structure change that sounds fine on paper but is often wrought with danger in practice. I think I'd just go with Hunt at half for 80 now, and maybe thinking about dropping Morgan entirely in favour of someone else who'd be a more natural fit as an interchange hooker (Seggy perhaps?). Absolutely brutal for all of Queensland's plans though. It would've been fine for Smith to announce this earlier, or at least announce that he wasn't sure yet, but as it is Queensland would've been planning the whole side around him -- bit of a dog act IMO.

Hunt seemed liked the better kicker when he kicked, but he hasn't kicked for what seems like thousands of years (just looking it up it was 2014 lol, but still). Inglis struck them well as a kid too, but same deal to an even bigger extent. It'll probably be Munster based on the fact that he was kicking last year and presumably still practising as a Smith understudy, but he's a dire kicker IMO -- gotta get Hunt and Inglis practising leading up to the series and then give them all a shoot-out in Game 1 camp.

A bit of a wild card, but Cooper was a good kicker coming through the grades too. Probably the best kicker in his prime out of all the options. I don't know how long it's been since he had a shot though, and he might not play 80 either.

I'd go with Hunt. He always looked a good kicker when he did it at Brisbane.

Lloyd Perrett kicks a mean goal. Get him on for 80. The 40 or so missed tackles would be worth it.

    This. So much.

He actually treats the refs with respect.
And then people complain that refs give him more than the dickheads who scream in the refs face every time a call goes against them

    You're an idiot.

Val Holmes can kick em pretty well.

It has to be Holmes. If he gets selected first.

Agree with Cribb. Hunt at 7 should not change without Smith. We need a genuine halfback now. And there’s at least some familiarity between he and McCullough.

Morgan is by far the better utility player anyway.

Holmes won’t be in the team so it’ll have to be Ben Hunt kicking goals. He kicks at 69%. Holmes is only slightly better.

Jesus Christ Ben Hunt and Andrew McCullough had better fucking own this series the next 12 months. I don’t know if I could take Pearce, Maloney and McInnes in the Australian Test spine.

Oh yeah it's obviously Holmes if picked, but I was working off the assumption he wouldn't be (maybe it'll help his chances now though?)

Pearce not having an Origin series to blow this season does actually bring him right in contention for the Australian side...

Haha that is just the worst. Munster has the Aus 6 locked up, though.
