What? Boyd is left wing. Chambers left centre. Holmes will be on the right with Gagai.

If they're set on playing Boyd on the left wing then yes. Oates did not deserve to get dropped and you could argue Boyd should've been moved to the right but it's not the same as Oates being straight up dropped for Valentine.

I just think Walters has made a rod for his own back. There was nothing in Game 1 that suggests a change of principle to Slater. If he wanted Slater originally fair enough but it's illogical to change your mind because of that game. We could've had Lockyer at fullback and we'd still have been flogged.

Any problems Boyd had in attack were due to execution. Not because of a clear issue with balance or structure imo. That is evidenced by the fact that we haven't needed Slater the last two years. End of the day I don't really care who plays fullback. It's just not a concern when compared to the issues with the forwards.

I think it is reasonable to suggest you lose more by taking Corey Oates' returning and early carries out of the game than you add with Slater's ability to play off the hip of Cooper Cronk. I also don't like Pappali in the middle, he looked dangerous running at the edges game one. I think all the rest of the changes are for the best.

Well, it's all over the news.

What about Smiths reverse kick in for Cronk?

Cronk fails to get to the ball.......smart money says Slater scores from that kick.

Apparently Walters reasoned that Holmes is a genuine winger and Oates is a manufactured winger. I didn't really see that as being a big problem. Strange.....

Well I stand corrected. Did not see those reports. In that case yeah that's fucking absurd.

I actually shouldn't have said Walters changed his mind because word is he wanted Slater and was outvoted by Lockyer and Miles. But yes to make a change based on something like that would be ridiculous.

My thoughts on the Qld side

I'm with Gemmell. Oates is the most important outside back selection for Qld. The forward pack is vastly inferior, got bashed in game 1, so you replace your best metre eater outside back with Holmes and Boyd on the wing. For years and years I thought Darius Boyd was actually pretty ordinary. It's only really the last 4/5 where I've come around and acknowledged what he brings to a team at fullback. But if you're bringing in Slater and Holmes it probably needs to be Boyd that makes way IMO. What should have happened was Boyd partner Gagai on the right and Oates retaining his position. In any case it's the first reason I'm happy as a NSW fan.

Once again, the forwards were badly beaten in game 1 up the guts. So what has Walters done? Dropped Myles, Thaiday, Guerra and Lillyman. That's 3 middle third forwards and 1 hybrid. Thaiday is a player I've hated and not rated for a long time, but if there is a point in Qld history where it is crucial he is selected and stands up, this is it. He's replaced them with 2 second rowers Hess and Cooper, 1 prop Wallace (who will be ruled out) and 1 hybrid in Glasby. 2 of these selections are absolute madness; Cooper and Glasby. Wallace and Hess, if not for the other selections, are good calls.

Glasby does a job for Melbourne and around 2015 I started to think he was an under rated forward. But he is no rep player. This is Qld's dynasty biting them in the ass IMO. Walters is a puppet, obviously, as the only way Glasby gets a nod is being selected by Smith and Cronk. He's not even a genuine front rower, he's a converted middle third forward who plays a role but isn't as effective there as when he played on an edge at times. Glasby played against NSW standard forwards on the weekend (Fifita, Gallen, Lewis and Graham) and made 9 runs for 46 metres. His selection ahead of Sims, Bolton, Lillyman, Thaiday and even Kaufusi is just really, really, really stupid. Qlders are already defending it with 'stats mean nothing when you pull on that maroon jersey' but he's seriously a fringe first grader. He's Bryan Norrie (albeit much less of an attacking threat in the middle) number 2.

Now; Cooper. If there is a forward that's not suited to fast, shortened 10 metre football it's him. He'll defend ok but he just has nothing in attack besides running a good line when there's a bit of space. To get him into the team you are moving the best edge forward in the game into the middle and you're dropping a 29 gamer. Walters justified the pick by saying he can play 80.... Well why pick Coen Hess if your 2nd rowers are going to play 80? And Papalii plays 80 way more effectively at NRL level than Cooper does. I can understand moving Papalii, you probably need to considering all of your props are useless, but Cooper isn't the fix. So it looks like Coen Hess will play middle 3rd which he doesn't even attempt to do at NRL level. The Cows move Lowe there who isn't suited to the middle at all just to get Hess onto the park on an edge.

Clearing out the dead wood needed to happen, but I think they've botched it big time. With the change at second row NSW now have Qld covered in every forward position bar lock (Jackson plays there as we know, not Frizell).

Yeah Glasby is not an Origin player but he can do a decent job off the bench at club level.

The balance of the side is better than in Game 1 but we just don't have the middle third to be competitive with NSW when they start rolling forward. I'm okay with Papalii being moved to the middle given that Wallace will probably be rubbed out. We have to get someone in there who will reliably go forward.

McGuire should not be playing lock. He's not Corey Parker. He should be up front with Napa.

Cooper is not a madness selection if you think Papalii is needed in the middle, which he pretty much is. Cooper's a safe selection for Thurston's short game.

Considering Walters mentioned him as an 80 minute player, yet picked Hess on the bench, it absolutely is IMO.

  14. Julian BJ Taylor

That's why Glaby is a madness pick.

To pick him you've ignored your best 5/6 middle third attacking players available.

  15. Maroon_Faithful M Faithful

That doesn't mean he will play 80. Walters wouldn't have picked two props on the bench if he wanted Hess to play in the middle.

  16. Maroon_Faithful M Faithful

Wow. Wallace actually got off. First bit of luck we've had this series.

  17. Boobidy BJ Gemmell

I swear we argued about this after last years series when you wanted to drop Goates because Boyd would be unable to play on the right side...

Goates being dropped is probably the worst decision in sporting history.

  18. Maroon_Faithful M Faithful

Very different situation. I said there was no way I'd drop Gagai and break-up the Inglis/Boyd combination just so Oates could play on the left. Not that Boyd couldn't do it. Just a totally unnecessary risk.

GI is out, and Gagai is clearly better than O'Neill. Like I said, I don't agree with Oates being dropped if Holmes is going to play on the left with Boyd at centre. But I can understand dropping Oates if Holmes is playing on the right and Boyd outside Chambers.

Personally I just would've stuck with Boyd at fullback.

  19. Alec AD Funkotron

I can see the positives in bringing in Holmes on either side - get him experience, as he'll probably be our fullback in the near future. Wouldn't have minded Munster coming in over Morgan, probably our next centre.

  20. Boobidy BJ Gemmell

Boyd will be QLD fullback for at least 3-4 years.
