Why is it far worse than back when there was just 1?

Because there will never be consistency amongst two minds. I would be okay with it if the same ref was always in charge. Swapping over every set is bullshit.

One ref is the only way.

  4. Alec AD Funkotron

Yeah, I'd go back to one and have a massive overhaul too. They are getting more and more retarded.

Also means you have shitter refs as you now need to bring through twice as many.

This guy should be a ref.

Frizzed he seems to be highly qualified for a Ref.

It's not. Every single year the refereeing is apparently worse than it was the year before. It's clearly not; it's an illusion. We just remember the recent howlers more vividly, forget a lot of the crap from earlier years and look through rose coloured glasses.

For the yearly posts about refereeing to actually be true, the standard of refereeing this year would have to be many, many times worse than it was in 2001. And it's clearly not.

No doubt next year, the year after and the year after people will say that the standard of refereeing has again gone down. I won't hold my breath waiting for the supposedly blind standard of refereeing awaiting us in 2056.

I'm a big believer in what Cribb is putting forward there BUT I think the video refereeing this year has been the worst ever.

It's definitely worse. I actually remember watching quite a few games back when there was just the 1 ref, and I was pretty satisfied with his performance.

Now there are multiple beyond terrible decisions in every match, every try is referred to the video ref and sometimes even he gets it wrong.

I remember Origin 3 2006 standing out as a bad refereeing performance, the worst of the year. Now that's just considered normal.

I actually think the standard of refereeing has leveled off a bit. It went through a particularly bad patch a few years ago with the introduction of two refs. My real beef is with the law-makers. Not the referees themselves. They're just responding to their superiors. it's the cunts who take a razor blade and a sharpie to the rule book every year.

Yes but that's nothing to do with the standard or refereeing. That's symptomatic of a policy that strips referees of confidence. There's no reason why refs should be more inclined to refer things now than say 20 years ago. In fact, very much to the contrary; refs are fitter and make better position now than they've ever have. If you'd had the VR in 1985 practically every try would've been referred under the current trends.

I'm all for the VR, but the frigidity amongst the group is palpable. It's nothing to do with the standard of refereeing though.

I still find two refs unnecessary and the video ref overused.

Personally I would like to see the video ref restricted to just ball groundings and players going into touch.

Nearly every try is referred, there's always few howlers that don't even get referred, can think of some shockers for the dogs the other week

My main gripe with 2 refs is when watching the match on TV, you can clearly hear 1 ref say "Penalty" but nothing happens. I can't remember which game it was but it happened again on the weekend. Something along the lines of "Penalty, holding down. Penalty" yet play continued.

The biggest problem with 2 refs is that you get 2 different interpretations. Always has been and always will be the biggest problem with it. As said earlier, if you had 1 ref that was in charge the whole time and the other guy was there as backup (like an onfield linesman or something) it would be far better.

I think it's fair to say that the referees today have a better support system, train harder ......have more technology helping them and even have ex-league players and coaches amongst their ranks to guide and assist them from a players and coaches point of view

.....and yet, their glaring, blatant inconsistencies still prevail.

So to my line of thinking.....the refs of yesteryear getting it wrong pales in comparison. They did not have half the help the refs are getting today.

So 10 yrs ago......referees were shit, but had limited resources to improve.

In 2013 they have resources up to the yahoo

    and are still shit.

ergo.......the standard of refereeing is getting worse.

Would love to see us back to one ref AND would love to see some change in the vid replay box. How the cunts up there are getting wrong what thousands of TV viewers can plainly see is a mystery.

Bullshit. The resources in 2003 weren't that much inferior to what they have now. They had video sessions. They had distance tracking. Refereeing was considered a full time profession. And so on.
