2020 State of Origin

As far as Jake goes, he's a bit of a weird one. His defence in Game II was fucking brutal despite his stats. I think he was in the top 5 players on the park due to just smashing cunts in their own end. It was an under-rated contributor IMO.

In saying that, Radley also offers brutal defence in this way, and Jake's contributions as a middle-forward in attack were legitimately terrible all three games. He played the distributor role decently enough but it also just wasn't necessary at all with Cleary + Walker/Keary... and again, Radley is also offers this anyway (IMO he's better at it). What JakeT traditionally had over Radley was his ability to take a legitimate prop hitup, and he hasn't effectively executed those at either club or Origin level for over a year now. Brown and Finucane leave him for dead in this area. Fuck, even Yeo.

He's not gonna be dropped. But I definitely don't consider him as being able to fill in up front anymore, so he's not really competing with Brown and Finucane as such - just Radley and Murray. He's basically a slower, bigger version of Radley now... and I don't think that's a plus.

I'm glad that Munster has finally delivered for QLD. I thought he's been pretty shit for QLD (in the halves) ever since his debut up until this year.

I'd pick Grant from reserve grade ahead of Friend. I'll also take Turpin ahead of Friend. And Friend would be useless off the bench. 1 series is all he gets, IMO.

I agree with the last point.

Friend as a starting hooker would still be better than Turps though, IMO, and in a world where Grant was going so shithouse that Bellyache dropped him then I'd pick Friend ahead of him there as well.

Turpin is gonna kill it in 2021. Lock him in for the QLD squad.

3 series wins in 15 years. Cant believe that...

The silver lining to this origin series was seeing Jake Friend get a much deserved spot in the side and winning players player for the series.

In typical Friendy fashion not getting much credit publicly, most Queensland's already dropping him but I reckon he's a big reason in the improvement to their middle third defence which ultimately was the different between 2020 and the 2 series that preceded.

He was fine, but in saying that, he should never play origin again.

I don't think it would be a total balls up to have Jake Friend take the hooking reigns for the first 25-30 with Grant coming on for the remainder.

I think I'd still go Grant starting and Hunt bench tbh.

Yeah Hunt off the bench offers a lot more.

Madness. Hope he doesn’t and Qld’s middle defence goes back to being pus.

Grant is just too good not to be starting. Cant wait to see how he goes at Melbourne under Bellamy and with a quality side because if he's this good at 22 with Wests, jeez he could be Qld hooker for the next 10+ years.

Turps is gonna take over. Grant will be good injury cover.
