    That’s fair enough then.
I was only watching on my phone so couldn’t see real clearly, and just heard the ref say he didn’t apply downward pressure, which I’m pretty sure defies the laws of physics.
But if he knocked it on that makes more sense.

  2. Tartmaster AJ James

Yeah, that was a terrible call. Textbook case of a tackle being complete and then tacklers dragging him out.

I may have been seeing things but it almost looked like Glasby was biting him.

It's pretty close. I mean a lot of people would call it a try and you may even after seeing it on tv replay. But I think the VR got it right.

  5. Tartmaster AJ James

Yeah after seeing it closer, I think it’s a try.
Plus the ref said he didn’t get downward pressure, not that it was a knock on.

    Strange call

Haha downward pressure has a special, technical meaning in rugby league. It doesn't literally mean he didn't force the ball downwards; it just means he didn't ground it. So anything from a knock on to a knock back to missing it is "not downward pressure", and he ruled it a knock on by sending it back to the 20.

  7. Julian BJ Taylor

    Agreed. Typical Melbourne/Qld grub

  8. Tartmaster AJ James

So the first disallowed try, where old mate just dropped it.
Was that ruled a ‘knock on’ or ‘not applying downward pressure’?

  9. Cribbage RG Cribb

Both of them were ruled knock on. "Not downward pressure" isn't really a ruling; it's just the absence of that specific ruling. Downward pressure = try. It's like saying something isn't a forward pass. There's a wide array of things it can be if it's not a forward pass - it can be a kick or a dummy or a high tackle etc etc.

"No downward pressure" is something a video ref will tend to send when the ball is on the ground and bouncing around and a player tries to ground it without actually catching it, but fails. Which is what happened in the Williams example. He's not going to say "no downward pressure" if a player actually has the ball and then drops it, even though it's technically also true. I mean it's also true that you haven't applied downward pressure when you're kicking it but it's not interesting information for the video ref to point out.

I think you're taking what the video ref says as too literally the ruling, when it's often just the explanation of the ruling. The ruling was knock on in goal both times.

    Gotcha, cheers boss.

Still think it was a try though.

    Cribbage likes this.

Yeah I probably would have given it as well tbh. But I made it a new season's resolution to not harp on about refereeing decisions too much unless they're obviously shockers, and that one definitely fell into the grey area for me.

The refs seem to be calling high tackle hits real late this year.

I dunno if they're getting tips off the bunker or just waiting for player reaction but its just oddly consistent across the game.

These are concerning signs for the Cows... Dugan shouldn't be able to crash over that easily.

  14. Magic AJ Parker

Now Morris just out of dummy half... way too soft.

Thats 30 points in the first 20 minutes of this 2nd half.

  15. Paddy P Orr

This is just beyond retarded. They fucking suck.

  16. Magic AJ Parker

    No try there IMO.

Very strange interpretation of 'shoulder to shoulder'

  17. Tartmaster AJ James

    That's a bad call
No way that's shoulder to shoulder, he hit him in the back ffs

  18. Maroon_Faithful M Faithful

It’s not shoulder to shoulder, but I’m okay with it. Zelezniak was half blocking him with the left arm.

  19. Cribbage RG Cribb

I'd be okay with it if DWZ was trying to shepherd the ball out of play, but he was trying to pick it up. Harsh IMO.

I realise the rules make absolutely no distinction between the those two scenarios, but if we're going to play the "I'm okay with it" game then that's where I'm gonna take it. :p

GET RID OF BOTH THE CLEARYS!!!!!!!
