I hate this period of the season in the NRL.

  2. Magic AJ Parker

I think the long term effects of having to back up with origin players is worse than having to play a couple of games without them.

Either way the whole thing is fucked.

    Tamou gone next year apparently.

    Heard he's headed for Penrith.

Yeah, I know Gould has always been a big fan so I'd imagine he was in favour of it.

Rumours are we signed Storm utility Ben Hampton. Haven't seen much of him. Anyone rate him?

And I love that the Knights are going for Kostjasyn.

  7. Julian BJ Taylor

Would be a direct replacement. Five-eighth/Centre utility that will do a job but will never be a true first grader IMO.

  8. Cribbage RG Cribb

Yeah Hampton's a good player to have in a 25 man squad IMO but you'd want to make sure he was on contract number 18-25 because I just don't think he'll ever be good enough in any one position to command a spot, even though I like him. If he ever proves me wrong I think it'll be at 6 or 1 IMO but I just don't see him happening.

Does make me wonder if he is their long term consideration as preparing for post-Thurston days in the next year or two when he does retire.

What I find strange is that it's a three year deal for Hampton. It makes sense though. It looks like we're losing Kosty, Hughes and possibly Thompson out of our top 25. We need back-up halves options outside of relying on Ponga and Bambling from the 20's and Hampton would have been cheap given he's from NQ and probably keen to go back.

The Cowboys are still after a prop for next year. I think it will certainly be a tall guy. Green has said before that he likes both his middle third players to all be different body shapes and sizes so that the defense has to think about how best to tackle each. I know Nelson Asafa Solomona and Jordon McLean have both been thrown up as potential Tamou signings. Both fit the bill. Perhaps Hampton is really good mates with one of them and this is a bit of a sweetener?

Ponga's debut really made me question the decision to re-sign all of Winterstein, Coote, Linnett and O'Neill. As far as I'm concerned Ponga needs to start next year. He's too good not to be there. The time has come to flick Linnett.

I don't think the Cows should buy anyone to replace Tamou - we need to keep that cash up our sleeves for re-signing Taumololo.

I'd just move Lowe to lock, Taumololo to the front row and Hess stays at right 2nd row.

  15. Boobidy BJ Gemmell

Ponga has class, but he got physically dominated every time he was tackled.

  16. Maroon_Faithful M Faithful

He's only 18 and weighs 80 odd kg though. They'll bulk him up.

  17. Paddy P Orr

He has some awesome footwork though. Pity he ended up being pinged for obstruction because that run was awesome.

  18. Julian BJ Taylor

Yeah Ponga won't work on the wing unless he puts on nearly 10kgs.

  19. Cribbage RG Cribb

Yeah he's too small for wing at the moment. Fine for fullback if he's a tough bastard, but he's obviously not going to play there with Thurston, Coote and Morgan all at the club. He's going to need to do some serious gym work over the offseason if he wants to start on the wing IMO, but that's not impossible.

Our shortage of props has been an issue this year on top of Scott now being out for the year. Hannant's retiring last year threw a spanner in. I think though we signed Jordan Maclean from Melbourne for next year. Need another one though.
