Should penalty goals be changed from 3 to 2 points

Every time I watch union I can't help but feel that it would be improved immensely by the lowering of penalty goals from 3 to 2 points (you could probably do the same for field goals I suppose).

    Discuss?

Meh. I reckon it'd increase cynical play even more so. The only way it'd work is if the majority of the time teams opted to go towards a try (kick for touch etc.) instead of taking the 2 on offer. Since rugby is such a territory/ possession/ momentum based game I'm not too sure teams would pass up 2 points.

I understand the purpose is to encourage positive play by the team in possession but it may just increase cynical play by the team on the back foot.

Every improvement you could consider is just basically slowly turning it into rugby league. Bit obvious league is far superior.

I'm not a fan of league but no. Shit post is shit.

Okay. Just ignore all logic and stick to your bias.

Need to get rid of players standing round for 25 minutes a game

    Clock off when:

    Penalties are awarded
    Free Kicks awarded
    Ball has gone into touch
    Penalties/Conversions are being taken
Players getting set to perform 22 Drop outs
    Scrums being set

    lol

It'd turn into a 4 and a half hour snoozefest.

Yeah you are probably right , still hate that you lose that much time to nothing happening

If there is one thing more boring than penalty goals it is the fucking rolling maul. If penalty goals are worth 2 points, teams will go for the sidelines more. This happened in the NRC last year where only about 10 penalties were kicked all season. However, teams just went for the touch line and the rolling maul. What is worse is that a law was specifically brought in making it even harder to defend the maul which is already ridiculously favourable to the attacking team.

This seems like the sort of suggestion outsiders make to try to improve rugby. I don't think anyone in rugby circles wants to see this change.

This is my prime channel surfing time. If you told me years ago that I would flick between channels during an all blacks game I'd probs say your fucking kidding.

You have an NFL player as your avatar...

and the clock stops when you go out of bounds or a flag is thrown

And that happens every play? Or is there a shit load of standing around doing nothing while the clock is still tickin?

There is only about 12 minutes of play in an NFL game.

How long does the game go for?

4 x 15 minute quarters but the average broadcast lasts 3 hours and 12 minutes.

I think that if you changed to 2 point penalties then you would need 4 point tries.

Rego's points are deliberate infringement is a good one. Teams like the ABs win because they want to win badly, and will do whatever takes. See behaviour of Richard Loe on the field for proof of this. If you are close to scoring a try against us - we will infringe. If it turns out that you will only get 2 points due to our infringement we will do it every time. This will force Rugby into handing out lots of yellow cards as that will be the only deterrent.

Tries in rugby are a huge deal from a psychological POV - teams will do anything to stop one being scored including cheating.

I'm not arguing nfl is any better I merely stated it does stop at points. Marcus Dupree is my avatar cause he's a freak not cause of the sport he played

Union, unlike League, requires such things as 'tactics' and 'decisions' which you may not be aware of from watching NRL. There's more than one way to play the game successfully. Changing the rules will have complicated impacts on the outcome.
