I always like to keep an eye on these. Dunno if anyone else does:

    Leaderboard after Round 8:

Plenty of Kiwis in the top 10. 4 in fact. :toot:

  2. Magic AJ Parker

Surprised Scott is top, thought he had a slow start to the season. I guess that's the advantage of not playing in the spine.

  3. Boobidy BJ Gemmell

I rate the RLW way higher than the Dally M. Actually, it's the only award I have a bit of respect for, even though half the judges are morons.

  4. Cribbage RG Cribb

    Yeah pretty much agree.

System of awarding points is excellent but the people they have doing it leave a lot to be desired.

I tried to start up a forumer-run version of this back on Rleague about 10 years ago but it didn't work.

  5. Mariner CL Warrington

Why didn't it work out? Would be up for running something like it here actually, quite interesting (once the season comes round again)

  6. Cribbage RG Cribb

Having different people do ratings caused too much variance -- ie. a 7 to one person was a 5 to another. Also, people tended to volunteer to do their own team's games and that created biases.

  7. Pretzel P Retzel

Matt Scott definitely shouldn't be on top.

Yeh they're pretty fucked rankings if you ask me.

  10. Boobidy BJ Gemmell

The system is the best one, but the judges are insane.

  11. Julian BJ Taylor

Is this points out of ten per game for every player?

  12. Magic AJ Parker

Yeh although I think they've somehow modified the above rankings to include an average over the bye week.

Mat Scott was a 62/80 3 weeks ago so there's no way he could be a 85/100 now.

Oooh look who's on top...and looks who's coming to the Warriors.

    Thanks Magic!

  15. Magic AJ Parker

Some really strange entries in there.

Matt Scott still bewilders me, he's had an awesome finish to the year but was bog average for most of the season.

  16. Boobidy BJ Gemmell

The system is great, too many fuckwits doing the rankings.

  17. cloughie09 TJ Clough

It's an interesting final 10, not sure some of them have been consistant enough for me

  18. Maroon_Faithful M Faithful

RTS player of the year? Yeah okay then...

  19. Magic AJ Parker

Says the bloke who comes back saying he hasn't been watching much footy this year.

I've seen enough to form an opinion. And I know enough about their judge's predispositions to know if you aren't a fullback or prop, you've got fuck all chance of winning it. It's a supercoach award, that is to say it's statistically dominated, with fervent regard for running metres. 8 of the top 10 this year play either in the 1 or up front. Last year 7 of the top 10 were either props or fullbacks. And so it goes.

Accounting for Parker, and Gallen who basically play as props and often push up front anyway, in 10 years they've named one player of the year who played elsewhere, namely Thurston in 07.

    2015 - Fullback (RTS)
    2014 - Fullback (Hayne)
    2013 - Prop/lock (Parker)
    2012 - Fullback (Barba)

    2011 - Prop/lock (Parker)
    2010 - Prop/lock (Gallen)

    2009 - Fullback (Hayne)
    2008 - Fullback (Slater)

    2006 - Prop (Bailey)

This award, regardless of the superior system, is just as exclusive to certain positions as the Dally M is. The positions are just different. Read what their editors say when they talk about players. It's an almost entirely statistical approach to the game. I'm just not surprised yet another metre-eater has won it.

"The Kiwi international led the league in run metres (5193), hit ups/runs (513) and kick return metres (2122) and also chimed in with 11 regular season tries."
