USA/Canada to submit joint bid for 2023 Rugby World Cup

The article states that Russia have already bid for 2023 and that USA/Canada may have more luck in 2027.

Hold on there, chaps. That'd potentially mean:

    2015 - England
    2019 - Japan
    2023 - Russia
    2027 - USA/Canada

I think it's great to have the showpiece of the game held outside it's traditional heartlands, but not three RWCs in a row. There should be rotation - NH, SH, Other, NH, SH, Other - not potentially 3 in a row outside of the heartlands. It'd be great for rugby to expand, but expansion should not be to the detriment of current fans/countries.

Being based is Siberia would be a hoot.

That is dire to do it like that tbh. Should take a leaf out of Fifa's book when it comes to selecting continents tbh.

  4. Eds E Ames

    No, they really shouldn't.

But it would mean that it's at different places every time, like Heef suggested should happen.

I have this vague hope that common sense might prevail. It will never happen.

  7. BigGuns DA Astele

I don't think thats really what Heef was getting at.

  8. loganb JEM Logan

Alright, I'll put it more simply.

    I agree with Heef :p

I don't necessarily think NH/SH/other would be the best way to do it, because admittedly there are very few candidates in the SH compared to the NH. While it would be great to spread rugby to the minnow countries, it would be dire if the SH had to wait 20 years to get our next RWC.

Should deffo only be held in minnow countries every 4th world cup or some shiz

lets keep this for the die hard nations IMO

Minnows only putting in bids because they know they're not good enough to qualify on merit.

So basically they're looking for sponsors?

  14. Rego RS Hutchinson

Heard about this on the radio.

Heef to cure the Canes IMO.

Also I wonder what the Highlanders are up to.

yeah it would be pretty wicked owning them, so dont get the point of it if the nzru still deals with all the contracting and shit

Basically they've also said there's no reason to keep the franchises in their current base city. Could we see the Hurricanes move to New Plymouth/Nastings?

  19. Rego RS Hutchinson

Doubtful. Westpac stadium is just so much larger and despite the hideous crowds, still get more than NP/ Naps will. They'll get heaps to start off with and then the novelty will wear off.

  20. HeathDavisSpeed HT Davis

That's irrelevant. They've said the winning bidder can take the Franchise anywhere. If the Franchise owner thinks Wellington's not the place to gain support and make money they can choose to go elsewhere.

I agree it's unlikely, but not impossible.
